When I was a child, I was always curious about the tower west of Highy 17, just south of Darien, then as an adult I read Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation in 1838-1839 by Francis Kemble. If you live anywhere in coastal Georgia, I highly recommend reading it. It's history is relevant to St. Simons Island, Little St. Simons Island, Brunswick, and Darien.
Last week I finally made a venture onto the plantation property. It is now owned by the Nature Conservancy and it's ominous past is disguised by the serene beauty. The property is open to the public year round, however, the home is closed to the public except for special events. It is a great place to go fishing, have a picnic, bird/wildlife watch, and as we found out last week, go blackberry picking. I highly recommend a big bottle of bug spray, a hat, and sunscreen, and if you do plan on blackberry picking (they're all over the property right now, just walk along the rice field dikes, you can't miss them) a pair of paints is a must. The property is full of mowed trails and history.
Butler Island Rice Plantation is located just off Highway 17 that runs parallel to I-75, just north of the Glynn/MacIntosh County line. Turn onto the dirt road next to the big tower along Butler River. You can't miss it.

I always seem to have bad luck with challah recipes, so I've tried this recipe several times before sharing it. It has come out great every time and tastes great too! I like this one because it uses very little eggs and is more healthy than most recipes. I've tried substituting two cups of whole wheat flour with great success. This recipe makes four loafs of challah.
Ingredients:
8 cups of flour 1 Tbsp. Yeast 3 eggs 3/4 cups of oil 3 Tbsp. of sugar 1 Tbsp. of salt 2 cups of water
Additional egg for painting the bread
Directions:
Kneed all ingredients together (without priming the yeast), for ten minutes. Let it rise for 1.5 hours, until doubled in size. Separate the dough into four balls, then subdivide each into coils for braiding. Braid and let it rise for twenty minutes. Paint the bread with the egg and sprinkle sesame seeds, if desired. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-45 minutes. |

Since moving to Savannah, we have had to subsist on stale, mass produced pita sold in the bakery section of the local grocery store. There is no where in Savannah to buy fresh kosher pitot, so we've had to learn how to make them ourselves. Pita is one of the most simple breads, and it takes very little time to make. This recipe makes enough for eight pitot.
Ingredients:
3 cups of flour 2 tsp. of yeast 1 tbsp. of sugar 1 cup of warm water 1 tsp. of salt
Directions:
Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Kneed the dough for ten minutes. Place the dough in a clean, ungreased bowl, and cover the bowl with plastic wrap. Let it rise for half an hour. Once the dough has risen to about double its size, preheat the oven to 500 degrees and separate the dough into eight balls. On a floured surface, roll each dough ball into a flat circle about half an inch thick and a hand breadth wide. Place a pan of water in the oven on the bottom rack. Then place, each pita on a baking sheet and bake for about five minutes, until they have inflated. Flip the pitot over and bake for two more minutes. Immediately remove pitot from the oven to a cool surface. Bake any remaining pitot. While they are still warm, close the pitot in a bag or sealed container.
Enjoy!

Back in early April, I wrote about how I found caterpillars in one bed of my garden, eating up the tomato plants. In the end, those plants were either too damaged from the caterpillars or they were just too close to one another and their roots were killing each other. I finally cut off the damage and was planning on pulling out all of the plants, when I saw that underneath all the wilted and brown leaves, there was new life coming out of some of the plants. So, instead of uprooting all of the plants, I uprooted a couple and saved a couple. And wouldn't you know, some of the tomatoes are ripening and will be ready to pick tomorrow!

Now this lovely plant to the left is something that I bought at the grocery store around Passover. Want to take a guess what it is? Someone told me how her family has had the same plant for at least a generation and has even shared it within the family. I had to give it a try. Each year they dig it up and cut off what they need for maror. After I planted mine, I read that horseraddish is an aggressive plant and often can overrun a garden so it should be planted in a corner or in a pot... Ooops! We'll see if this counts as a corner.
And while I'm sharing pictures, here's a look at the rest of the garden:

Pumpkin

A few weeks ago, I was making conversation with a neighbor down the street and was admiring some lovely plants he had growing in his shady yard. Guess what he gave me the following week :D

I plan on leaving these baby crape myrtles at his doorstep. They're growing wild in the backyard, and will end up getting driven over or cut by the lawn mower one of these days.
Also, my sweet neighbor, the extreme city gardener, gave me something before she moved away to warmer places. She said it will attract butterflies.
I hope it won't attract the butterflies whose larve are eating up my cabbage like the ones pictured below. Could you leave me a note about what kind they are? It's too late to do anything about them, it all happened on finals week. I didn't notice them until Shabbat, and couldn't do anything then. Cabbage is just about out of season anyway.
